Wessex Water is taking steps to achieve the full decarbonisation of all aspects of its work by 2040 through creating more green apprenticeship opportunities.
Last year, the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (ifATE) launched a new green apprenticeships advisory panel.
The panel advises companies on how existing apprenticeships could be made greener and highlights any gaps that could be filled by brand-new green apprenticeships.
Wessex Water currently has 11 green apprentices within the company and aims to employ a further six within the next six months.
Green apprenticeships are roles that focus on either reducing carbon emissions, restoring nature or making similar environmental improvements.
Wessex Water’s Early Careers Manager, Becca Thurston said: “The identification of green apprenticeships has allowed us to proudly reflect the number of apprentices that have a positive impact on our environment.
“Wessex Water has seen a significant increase in the interest of young people wanting to work with an environmentally strong company. The categorisation of green apprenticeships has allowed us to harness that passion.
“Apprenticeships, due to their nature, allow us to put into practice theories often talked about – they are a great way to have a practical impact. We’re confident that the utilisation of green apprenticeships will help us to achieve our goal of net zero total emissions by 2040.”
