Trojan Technologies has launched TrojanUVFocus, a new ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system developed specifically for municipal non-potable water reuse applications.
The platform is designed to help water utilities expand reclamation and reuse programmes while reducing maintenance requirements and lifecycle costs. It builds on technologies used across Trojan’s existing municipal UV treatment portfolio.
UV disinfection designed for municipal water reuse
TrojanUVFocus has been developed for non-potable reuse applications with treatment capacities ranging from 1 to 6 million US gallons per day, equivalent to approximately 3.79 to 22.71 million litres per day.
According to Trojan Technologies, the system delivers the UV dose required for its intended applications using fewer lamps. This approach is designed to reduce installation and maintenance costs while maintaining effective disinfection performance.
The launch comes as municipalities increasingly consider reclaimed water for applications that do not require drinking water quality, including landscape irrigation, development and industrial processes.
Solo Lamp and ActiClean technologies support maintenance efficiency
The TrojanUVFocus platform incorporates the company’s energy-efficient Solo Lamp technology and ActiClean sleeve-cleaning system, both of which are used in other TrojanUV products.
The system has been developed using operator feedback collected over the past decade, with an emphasis on simplifying maintenance and reducing operational complexity.
Its patent-pending chamber design is intended to optimise water flow and improve UV dose delivery. Trojan Technologies says these features can help utilities manage disinfection requirements while limiting equipment maintenance demands.
Independent validation and remote performance monitoring
Trojan Technologies reports that TrojanUVFocus has undergone independent validation against established UV disinfection guidance, including the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Ultraviolet Disinfection Guidance Manual, National Water Research Institute water reuse guidance and relevant EPA guidance for innovative approaches.
Validation is intended to provide utilities with evidence of disinfection performance when evaluating technologies for municipal reuse projects. Specific treatment requirements will depend on the intended reuse application and applicable regulations.
The platform also incorporates Stream, Trojan’s remote monitoring technology, which provides access to live system performance information. The feature is currently available for installations in North America.
Supporting alternative municipal water supplies
With water scarcity and changing water quality conditions increasing pressure on municipal supplies, non-potable reuse offers an opportunity to reduce demand for freshwater in applications where drinking water quality is not required.
Katrina Williams, Vice President of Innovation at Trojan Technologies, said the new system is intended to support utilities exploring alternative water sources.
“Shrinking water supplies and variable water quality are leading many municipalities to explore water reuse. With the introduction of the TrojanUVFocus, we’re helping municipalities around the world to secure a cost-effective, local, and sustainable water supply for a range of uses such as irrigation, development, and industrial processes.”
Trojan Technologies says its wider UV technology portfolio has been deployed in more than 11,000 municipal installations worldwide. The TrojanUVFocus extends that portfolio with a system developed specifically for non-potable reuse rather than general municipal disinfection applications.
