Sand dams worldwide water crisis solution has been recognised on the global stage, with the UK-based organisation named a finalist in the 2026 Water Air Food Awards (WAFA).
Sand Dams Worldwide, headquartered in London, has been shortlisted in the Water category for its work delivering community-led water solutions across dryland regions.
Sand dams worldwide water crisis solution gains global recognition
The Water Air Food Awards highlight initiatives addressing environmental challenges through community-led approaches. Sand Dams Worldwide’s model focuses on improving access to reliable water supplies in arid regions where rainfall is unpredictable and water scarcity is widespread.
The organisation has supported projects across multiple countries in Africa, helping communities capture and store rainwater that would otherwise be lost.
Nature-based infrastructure addresses water scarcity
Sand dams are reinforced concrete structures built across seasonal riverbeds, designed to capture rainwater within sand deposits. This stored water is protected from evaporation and contamination, remaining accessible throughout the year.
Each dam can store significant volumes of water and serve local communities over extended periods, providing a long-term solution for regions facing persistent water shortages.
Impact across communities and livelihoods
The initiative has contributed to improved access to water for more than one million people, alongside wider benefits including reduced time spent collecting water, improved hygiene and enhanced food security.
By combining water infrastructure with climate-smart agriculture and environmental restoration, the approach supports broader resilience in vulnerable communities.
Scaling community-led solutions
The recognition reflects growing interest in scalable, nature-based approaches to water and climate challenges. Sand Dams Worldwide’s model is based on community participation, local partnerships and long-term sustainability.
The organisation aims to expand its work further, contributing to wider efforts to address water scarcity, climate resilience and rural development.
The winner of the Water category will be announced at the Generation Green event in Cairo in summer 2026.
