A containerised hydrogen energy storage system designed to provide continuous renewable power for critical infrastructure is moving towards commercial deployment following successful technical validation and pilot installations.

Developed by Spanish startup ATOM H2, the system converts surplus solar energy into hydrogen before converting it back into electricity when required.

The project also integrates remote telemetry technology from Ovarro to monitor, control and manage the system remotely.

Supporting resilient renewable energy

Hydrogen energy storage is increasingly being explored as a way of overcoming one of renewable energy’s biggest challenges — providing reliable power when solar or wind generation is unavailable.

ATOM H2’s system stores surplus renewable electricity as hydrogen before converting it back into electricity when demand requires.

The result is a continuous source of low-emission power designed for critical infrastructure.

Potential applications include telecommunications sites and other remote or off-grid locations where uninterrupted electricity supplies are essential.

Remote monitoring for critical infrastructure

As the technology moves towards commercial deployment, remote monitoring and operational control become increasingly important.

Ovarro’s TBox remote telemetry unit has been integrated into the control architecture to collect operational data, communicate with field devices and enable both local and remote management.

The telemetry platform continuously monitors hydrogen production, storage and electricity generation while providing secure communications between assets.

The telemetry system allows operators to monitor performance and respond quickly to changing operating conditions.

Building on proven industrial technology

The telemetry integration was delivered through collaboration between ATOM H2, engineering partner IDNEO and Spanish distributor Becolve Digital.

According to the project partners, combining established industrial telemetry with emerging hydrogen technology has helped accelerate development while providing a familiar operating environment.

Becolve Digital also supported implementation and training as part of the wider deployment programme.

Hydrogen moves towards commercial deployment

ATOM H2 is preparing its first commercial installations following successful pilot projects and technical validation.

The company was recognised during Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2026 as one of Catalonia’s most promising startups and also received recognition through CaixaBank’s EmprendeXXI Awards.

As hydrogen technologies continue to mature, reliable monitoring, automation and remote control are expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting resilient energy infrastructure.

For utilities and industrial operators, proven telemetry platforms could help accelerate the wider adoption of hydrogen energy storage technologies.
