Curio Water has formed a partnership with ozone systems engineering specialist Ozcon Environmental as it develops treatment systems targeting micropollutants and PFAS.
The partnership will support the development of Curio’s BlueBarrier treatment trains, which combine different water treatment technologies according to the contaminants and water conditions involved.
Ozcon adds ozone engineering expertise
Birmingham-based Ozcon will work with Curio at Cranfield University Technology Park, providing specialist engineering knowledge for integrated ozone treatment systems.
The company will support both new and existing ozone applications as Curio develops systems designed to remove micropollutants from different water sources and treatment environments.
Ozone is used in water treatment as an oxidation process capable of breaking down certain organic contaminants. Its effectiveness depends on factors including water chemistry, contaminant characteristics and how it is integrated with other treatment processes.
“Using ozone as part of a tailored treatment train to tackle micropollutants and PFAS in different water matrices in different industries requires the advanced technical and specialist insights that the Ozcon team will provide,” said Howard Marles, Founder and CEO of Curio Water.
Partnership builds on Severn Trent projects
The agreement follows Curio’s work with Severn Trent on ozone-based micropollutant removal plants launched in the UK in 2025.
Curio is now seeking to apply ozone and other treatment technologies across a wider range of sites as interest grows in removing persistent contaminants from water.
The company’s wider approach involves combining technologies including ozone, ultraviolet treatment, filtration and carbon-based processes within treatment trains designed for individual applications.
Curio also works with technology and engineering companies including Nereus, Desotec, Atlas Copco and Veolia Water Technologies.
BlueBarrier targets persistent contaminants
The BlueBarrier treatment trains are being developed to address contaminants including micropollutants, PFAS and microplastics.
Rather than relying on a single treatment technology, the approach is intended to combine different processes according to the contaminants being targeted and the characteristics of the water being treated.
Ozcon’s involvement will provide additional expertise in ozone system selection, application assessment and engineering.
The company, which was established in 2019, also works on ozone applications outside conventional water treatment, including food and beverage safety and air, smoke and odour control.
