Börger has completed the installation of a new pump and macerating system at a processing plant that converts food waste into nutrient-rich compost.
The system has been designed to handle acidic food waste, combining an auger, grinder and rotary lobe pump to move and reduce organic material before it enters the composting process.
Food waste can be a demanding material to process because it often contains variable solids, acidic content and inconsistent particle sizes. Equipment used at the front end of composting and organic waste facilities therefore needs to be robust enough to maintain flow while reducing blockages and unplanned downtime.
According to Börger, its pump and macerating technology has been configured to methodically move and reduce the food waste stream, helping prepare it for composting.
The company said the system includes its Maintenance-In-Place design, which is intended to make servicing easier by allowing key wetted parts to be accessed without removing pipework or drive components. Börger said this helps improve reliability and reduce downtime in demanding waste processing applications.
A key part of the installation is the Börger Multicrusher, which macerates solids and homogenises the food waste to support a more effective pumping process.
Börger’s pumps and macerators are also used in anaerobic digestion and biogas applications. At the Creed Integrated Waste Management Facility on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland, a Börger Multicrusher has been used to process waste salmon for use in an anaerobic digestion process.
In that application, the technology cuts waste salmon to a required maximum particle size of 12mm to support compliance with regulations covering digestate use as renewable fertiliser.
Börger rotary lobe pumps are also in use at three Singleton Birch biogas plants in Northern Lincolnshire, where maize, sugar beet and chicken litter are used as feedstock in the anaerobic digestion process.
The latest composting installation highlights the role of pumping and macerating equipment in helping operators process challenging organic waste streams more reliably, whether the end product is compost, biogas or digestate for agricultural use.
