The Sensors for Water Interest Group has appointed Angus Fosten as a director.
Fosten is Sales Lead for the Ott, Partech and In-Situ brands in the UK and has more than 35 years of experience in water measurement instrumentation.
SWIG is a not-for-profit information, ideas-exchange and networking group focused on the use of sensors in water and wastewater processes, water networks and the natural environment.
Water measurement expertise added to SWIG board
Fosten’s appointment comes as the water sector places growing emphasis on real-time monitoring, data quality and process insight to support compliance, operational resilience and environmental protection.
“We are delighted to welcome Angus to the SWIG board,” said SWIG Chair Dr Mike Strahand.
“He brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise, and is well known in the water sector, its supply chain and in academia.”
Dr Strahand said Fosten’s interest in bringing measurement into operational processes and environmental protection made SWIG a good fit for his expertise.
Role of sensors in AMP8 delivery
Fosten described himself as a “measurement technology geek” and said the latest developments in water sensors are improving accuracy, stability, sensitivity, repeatability, ease of use and connectivity.
He said measurement should be focused on useful operational insight, not simply collecting data for its own sake.
“Everybody knows that you can’t manage what you don’t measure, but that does not mean measurement for measurement’s sake,” Fosten said.
“It is vitally important that we monitor parameters that provide useful insights for actions, and that is why SWIG plays such an important role; bringing together stakeholders from all corners of the water sector.”
The appointment comes during AMP8, the 2025-30 investment period for the water sector in England and Wales. Fosten said sensors would be critical to helping maximise the value of planned investment in water industry assets.
Monitoring for process and environmental performance
Water sensors are increasingly used for process control, regulatory compliance, performance monitoring, optimisation and environmental protection.
“Sensors play an essential role in process control, checking compliance with performance targets and regulations, and providing insights for process optimisation and environmental protection,” Dr Strahand said.
Ott provides hydrology and environmental monitoring technologies covering water level, flow, water quality, meteorology and connectivity. In-Situ provides water quality and water level monitoring equipment, while Partech focuses on water and wastewater treatment process control.
