Sensmet has appointed Jyri Hämäläinen as Chief Product Officer, strengthening its leadership team as the Finnish technology company expands its continuous metals monitoring technology.

Hämäläinen brings more than 25 years of experience across technology, product development, global sales and marketing. His appointment comes as Sensmet continues to develop real-time multi-metal analysis for industrial process water, mining, battery materials and wastewater applications.

New leadership role focuses on product development

As Chief Product Officer, Hämäläinen will lead the development of Sensmet’s continuous metals monitoring instruments and support their expansion into a wider range of industrial applications.

Most recently, he served as Co-Founder and Director at Emberion, where he worked on product strategy, global sales and marketing. His previous career also includes director roles at Nokia Technologies and strategic consulting experience with Boston Consulting Group.

Hämäläinen said Sensmet’s technology has already demonstrated its potential across several applications and that his focus will be on extending its commercial reach.

“I am very pleased to be joining Sensmet at this pivotal stage in the company’s growth. Sensmet’s core technology is extremely impressive, and has been proven in a wide variety of applications.”

He added that continuous measurement of metal concentrations can address important monitoring challenges across a number of fast-growing industries.

“By delivering a solution to the continuous measurement of metal concentrations, Sensmet has resolved a major challenge for many rapidly growing industries, so I am excited to take on a role that will help to leverage that technology, and make it applicable to a much wider group of customers and applications.”

Continuous metals monitoring supports water applications

Sensmet’s technology is based on Micro-Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy, or µDOES, which enables online multi-metal analysis of aqueous samples.

The technology is designed to measure metal concentrations continuously rather than relying solely on periodic laboratory sampling. This gives operators faster access to information about changes in process and environmental waters.

Applications include industrial process water, mining, wastewater treatment, lithium production and battery-metal recycling. Sensmet says the technology can support improved process efficiency, metal recovery, product quality and environmental protection.

Real-time monitoring can improve process decisions

Continuous monitoring can help operators identify changes in metal concentrations earlier than conventional laboratory-only approaches. This can support faster intervention where process conditions change or where environmental limits need to be closely managed.

Sensmet says its technology is particularly relevant to industries handling valuable metals or complex aqueous streams, where delays in obtaining laboratory results can affect recovery, efficiency and operational decision-making.

The company is also targeting applications where continuous data can help reduce uncertainty and improve visibility across industrial processes.

Battery metals remain an important growth area

Battery materials are one of the main markets for Sensmet’s monitoring technology. The company highlights lithium and other critical metals as important applications during both production and recycling.

Continuous measurement can help operators track metal concentrations through different stages of production, supporting process control and potentially improving recovery from valuable material streams.

These capabilities are also relevant to mining and hydrometallurgical processes, where metal concentrations can fluctuate significantly over time.

Industrial and wastewater applications expanding

Beyond battery materials, Sensmet is positioning continuous metals monitoring for wider industrial and wastewater applications.

Heavy metals and other dissolved elements can be important indicators in industrial discharge, process water and treatment systems. Real-time measurement can therefore provide earlier warning of changing conditions and support more informed operational decisions.

H2O Global News continues to cover developments in water quality monitoring as industrial operators and utilities adopt more continuous and data-led approaches to water management.

Sensmet continues growth strategy

Sensmet CEO Dr Toni Laurila said Hämäläinen’s experience would support the company’s next phase of product and commercial development.

“We are delighted to welcome Jyri to the Sensmet team. He is a highly accomplished individual with impressive credentials, and I am sure that he will play an important role in accelerating Sensmet’s growth.”

The appointment adds further technology and product-development experience to Sensmet’s leadership team as the company works to expand the application of its metals monitoring systems across international markets.

Sensmet says the combination of real-time measurement, industrial process knowledge and wider market development will remain central to its growth strategy.
