Anglian Water extends Samotics condition monitoring framework

Anglian Water has extended its Samotics condition monitoring framework, supporting predictive maintenance across more than 250 clean water assets.

Anglian Water has signed a two-year extension to its condition-based monitoring framework with industrial artificial intelligence specialist Samotics.

The framework, agreed in April, covers more than 250 clean water assets currently monitored by Samotics’ SAM4 predictive maintenance system across Anglian Water’s operations.

It is the first major renewal since the original three-year framework was agreed in March 2023. The partnership began in November 2020 and is now entering its sixth year.

The core of the programme focuses on clean water optimisation, with hundreds of assets monitored continuously across Anglian Water’s water supply operations.

The agreement will also extend condition monitoring to new pumping stations being commissioned in key locations across the Strategic Pipeline Alliance.

The Strategic Pipeline Alliance forms part of Anglian Water’s major water infrastructure programme, designed to move water more effectively across its region.

Anglian Water supplies drinking water to more than five million customers across the East of England and collects and treats used water from more than seven million people.

SAM4 supports predictive maintenance

SAM4 uses electrical signature analysis to monitor equipment remotely from the motor control cabinet.

The system uses artificial intelligence to analyse current and voltage signals from pumps and motors, making it possible to monitor assets continuously without installing sensors directly on the equipment.

Samotics said the platform can identify developing faults including cavitation, bearing wear and misaligned components, allowing maintenance teams to act before problems escalate.

The release states that SAM4 delivers 97% detection accuracy with fewer than 1% false positives.

Early fault detection avoids costs

Since adopting SAM4 in 2020, Anglian Water has prevented £886,800 in costs through early fault detection and avoided failures, according to the release.

Andy Smith, smart water systems senior manager at Anglian Water, said: “Our approach to maintenance is built around a simple principle: right maintenance, right time. To achieve that, we need to understand what our assets are telling us and identify potential problems early, before they affect performance or service.

“SAM4 gives our teams the visibility and confidence to act at the right time. Across our pumping stations, and now on the Strategic Pipeline, we can identify developing issues early and plan maintenance better. This helps us increase asset uptime, makes the best use of our engineers’ time and reduces the risk of disruption.

Digital monitoring supports water infrastructure resilience

The framework extension reflects wider use of digital monitoring and predictive maintenance in water infrastructure.

Samotics says its technology is designed for hard-to-reach industrial assets and uses electrical signals, existing hardware or simple sensors, and an AI-driven platform to identify when an asset needs maintenance or is performing sub-optimally.

The company says continuous asset monitoring can help reduce unplanned downtime, pollution events and energy waste.
