Behind the region’s wastewater network, women across South West Water are playing a central role in improving how wastewater is managed and how local environments are protected.
This year, engineer Hazel Tranchant, operations leader Jenny Eamer, and environmental performance specialist Helen Dobby have each led programmes that are reducing storm overflow spills, upgrading ageing assets and providing new insight into how water quality behaves throughout the year.
“We’ve made things better and we’re not stopping there” — Jenny Eamer
Operations Manager Jenny Eamer leads wastewater operations in Mid and East Devon. She highlighted the progress made through stronger collaboration and a focus on environmental outcomes. Her work includes upgrades in Exmouth and the Maer Lane Sewage Treatment Works, alongside the introduction of new smart technologies such as drones and 3D cameras.
“The difference is significant” — Hazel Tranchant
Head of Tactical Asset Management Hazel Tranchant has overseen major engineering works to reduce reliance on storm overflows. In Exmouth, the number of spills has more than halved compared with 2024. Further improvements at Hartopp Road Pump Station and Lime Kilns are also delivering measurable reductions.
“Understanding what happens beyond the bathing season” — Helen Dobby
Head of Environmental Performance Helen Dobby has led a winter sampling pilot across 14 bathing sites and one shellfish water, offering valuable insights into water quality during colder months. Findings for Exmouth showed consistently good water quality year-round. Her team is also working with the University of Exeter and exploring new technology to improve modelling and catchment understanding.
Ongoing investment in Exmouth
South West Water is investing £38 million in Exmouth to protect the environment and support the beach’s ‘excellent’ bathing water status. This includes upgrades to pumping stations and treatment works to reduce the frequency and impact of storm overflow events.
Together, Jenny, Hazel and Helen highlight the continued commitment across South West Water to protect the environment, improve water quality and respond to the expectations of customers and communities.
