WaterSurplus, a recognised leader in sustainable water treatment technologies, has announced that its NanoStack™ Coating for reverse osmosis (RO) membranes has achieved NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 certification – a key benchmark confirming safety and quality for products in contact with drinking water. The certification was independently verified by IAPMO R&T, North America’s leading plumbing and mechanical product certification agency.

This achievement marks an important milestone for WaterSurplus, as the NanoStack™ technology forms a core component of its ImpactRO™ brackish water reverse osmosis (BWRO) system. This advanced platform integrates multiple innovations into one high-efficiency solution for sustainable water purification and reuse.

According to Dileep Agnihotri, Chief Technology Officer at WaterSurplus, the NanoStack™ coating is “engineered with a revolutionary, bio-inspired polymer that creates an ultra-hydrophilic surface with fouling and scaling-resistant characteristics, allowing contaminants to wash away naturally during normal operation.”

These unique properties dramatically extend the intervals between clean-in-place (CIP) cycles and enable NanoStack™-coated membranes to recover nearly all of their original performance after cleaning. As a result, systems experience increased uptime, longer membrane life, and more stable operation compared with conventional uncoated RO elements.

When integrated into the ImpactRO™ system, NanoStack™-coated membranes can achieve up to 96% product recovery, a fourfold reduction in fouling and downtime, and up to double the membrane lifespan of traditional multi-stage BWRO systems. The technology is particularly suited to high-recovery and high-efficiency applications, as well as water reuse and reclamation systems operating in challenging, high-fouling conditions.

The NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 certification involves a rigorous evaluation of material composition, manufacturing processes, and product performance. Continuous audits and periodic retesting ensure long-term compliance and product integrity. With this latest milestone, WaterSurplus now has two products certified under the NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 standard – NanoStack™ membrane coating and its OxiPlus™ catalytic filter media.

Agnihotri added, “NSF certification is an important milestone in the commercialisation of NanoStack membranes and other WaterSurplus technologies.”
