The World Hydropower Congress is the world’s largest hydropower industry event. Organised by the International Hydropower Association (IHA), it brings together leading decision-makers, innovators and experts from industry, government, finance, civil society and academia.

For the very first time, the congress is free and open to all. More than 4,000 attendees have already registered to-date from over 130 countries.

Running from 7-24 September 2021, the congress has over 30 live events featuring the biggest names in the industry.

Yesterday, 7 September, Former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (1997-2007) and Executive Chairman of the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, Tony Blair, and Former Prime Minister of Australia and Co-Chair of the International Forum on Pumped Storage Hydropower, Malcolm Turnbull, opened the floor in a discussion titled, “Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Sustainable Hydropower: Closing the Gap between Rhetoric and Action.”

The potential absence of sufficient hydropower capacity is the “ignored crisis within the climate crisis” agreed Turnbull and Blair.

“Long duration storage is absolutely essential and pumped hydro is going to be one of the principal means of achieving that,” commented Mr Blair, in an online session now available to view on-demand.

The first day of the congress has set an exciting tone for things to come. Not only is the event bringing together leaders and thinkers from across the industry, it will set forth a range of major announcements and commitments made by and on behalf of the hydropower sector.‍

Today, 8 September, will witness the launch of the Hydropower Sustainability Standard, a new certification scheme for hydropower projects globally, to ensure all projects are sustainable and conducted in line with social and environmental best practice.

Less than two months before the start of COP26, the World Hydropower Congress could not be more relevant. It gives the industry the opportunity to show that it is committed, and central, to the clean energy transition.
