Cold weather increases the risk of frozen pipes, which can expand by nearly 10% as water turns to ice. This expansion can restrict flow, cause pipes to split and lead to leaks, bursts and flooding inside homes and gardens.
Martin Pipe, Customer Leakage Manager at South West Water, said:
“Every winter, we see a high number of bursts on both our network and customers’ private pipework due to freezing conditions. Alongside our teams working around the clock to keep taps flowing, there are simple steps customers can take to protect their homes and reduce the impact of cold weather.”
Tips to protect your home in freezing temperatures
- Lag pipes and tanks: Insulate pipework in unheated areas such as lofts, garages and gardens.
- Know where your stop tap is: Usually under the kitchen sink — ensure you can turn it off quickly if needed.
- Leave heating on low: If you are away, keep the temperature steady to prevent pipes freezing.
- Service your boiler: Check heating systems are working efficiently.
- Bleed radiators: Improve efficiency and reduce the risk of freezing.
- Keep plumber details handy: In case repairs are needed.
- Check your meter: South West Water provides guidance online for leak checks.
South West Water also warns that underground service pipes can be affected when the ground freezes, causing movement that may lead to leaks or bursts. Customers may notice reduced pressure or visible water in the garden; in many cases, service pipes are the responsibility of the property owner.
What to do if you have frozen pipes
- Check with neighbours — if they still have water, your pipes may be frozen.
- Look for signs of a split, but remember: leaks may not appear until the pipe thaws.
- Turn off the supply using your internal stop tap.
- If your heating is already on, leave it running; do not switch it on solely to thaw pipes.
- Drain the cold-water system by flushing the toilet and opening cold taps.
- Gently thaw pipes using a warm towel or hot water bottle wrapped in a towel.
- Once thawed, turn taps off and slowly switch the supply back on; recheck for leaks under pressure.
- If a leak or burst is found, contact a reputable plumber. WaterSafe-approved contractors are recommended.
