Bristol Water has launched its new Come Rain or Shine campaign by offering 1,750 free water butts to customers, encouraging more efficient water use throughout the year after the UK’s warmest summer on record.

From 27 October, Bristol Water customers can order a free 200-litre water butt kit, designed to make it easier to use rainwater instead of treated drinking water for garden and outdoor use. Each kit includes a tap, stand, lid, and downpipe connector compatible with 68mm round and 65mm square downpipes, providing everything required for simple home installation.

Made from durable, recycled polypropylene, the water butt is quick to assemble and arrives neatly boxed with clear instructions. In addition to conserving drinking water, water butts help reduce pressure on sewer networks by holding back excess rainfall during storms.

Paul Dommett, Water Efficiency Delivery Manager at Bristol Water, explained:
“Autumn may seem like a strange time to be talking about water efficiency, but after a record warm summer, our storage levels are lower than usual for this time of year. Each water butt we’re giving away stores 200 litres of rainwater, meaning a combined total of 350,000 litres can be stored every time these butts refill.”

Through the Come Rain or Shine campaign, Bristol Water is also providing advice to help households save water indoors and outdoors, with guidance on leak detection, water meter benefits, and seasonal storage management. The initiative forms part of the utility’s long-term strategy to reduce leakage, maintaining one of the lowest total leakage levels in the UK water sector.

Customers can order their free kit on a first-come, first-served basis using the postcode checker available on Bristol Water’s website.
