Process filtration specialist Amazon Filters has delivered an emergency supply of filter cartridges to support efforts to restore safe drinking water to around 20,000 homes and businesses in South East England.

The Surrey-based manufacturer responded to an urgent request from a water company after a treatment works experienced a water quality issue that led to a precautionary boil water notice. The incident followed concerns around disinfection processes, meaning regulatory standards for potable supply were temporarily not being met.

Amazon Filters mobilised teams across sales, operations, stores and logistics to deliver 225 filter cartridges within a single day from its Camberley production facility. A further 225 cartridges were dispatched two days later, with additional units prepared in line with ongoing operational requirements.

Rapid response to protect water quality

The total order comprised 900 cartridges, required to support treatment processes addressing turbidity and microbial risk. The filters supplied were 40-inch SupaSpun II R31 Cryptosporidium Retentive cartridges, designed to provide one-micron filtration capable of removing cryptosporidium.

The cartridges are part of Amazon Filters’ SupaSpun II absolute-rated depth filter range and are manufactured using sustainable polypropylene. The products are approved for use in public water supplies under the Drinking Water Inspectorate’s Regulation 31.

To ensure compatibility with multiple housing configurations at the treatment works, the company utilised ‘double open-ended’ stock, allowing cartridges to be rapidly end-capped prior to dispatch.

Lisa Astbury, Sales Manager at Amazon Filters, said the priority was enabling operators to act quickly.

“As soon as we received the order, we acted immediately to enable the operators to install the new cartridges and move to restore continuity of supply,” she said. “Our response demonstrates the importance of being able to manufacture and deliver at pace when water quality is at risk.”

Long-standing role in UK water treatment

Amazon Filters has supplied filtration solutions to the UK and European water sectors for more than 40 years. Its products are used to support regulatory compliance and consistent water quality across a range of treatment applications.

Beyond cryptosporidium and turbidity control, the company’s filtration systems are used for chlorine reduction, drought management and the removal of contaminants such as iron, manganese and other dissolved substances.

Based on flow rates and operational projections, Amazon Filters estimates its cartridge filtration systems supported the treatment of more than 350 billion litres of water by UK water companies in 2024.
