Work began on site this week as part of £1.4m investment by Yorkshire Water to upgrade a combined storm overflow (CSO) at Cricket Inn Crescent, Park Hill, Sheffield, a move that will reduce storm discharges into the river Don.

Contract partners Galliford Try and Carter Taylor started the improvement work on site on Monday 13 January 2025.

The project to improve water quality in the Don, includes rebuilding the storm overflow upstream of the current site, new manholes, upgrading equipment and pipework and increasing capacity of the network. This will allow greater retention of stormwater caused by wet weather events within the sewer network during rainfall events, which will transfer through the network to be fully treated.

A signed diversion is in place as the junction of Cricket Inn Crescent and Cricket Inn Road will be closed so that the improvement work can be carried out safely, but this won’t affect access to residents’ driveways or pedestrian routes.

Lumi Ajayi, project manager, Yorkshire Water said:  This is one of a number of large-scale infrastructure projects around Sheffield and south Yorkshire, part of our £180m investment by April 2025, to reduce storm overflows and improve water quality across the region.

“On completion, the £1.4m of investment will reduce the frequency of storm discharges flowing into the river Don by 48% from this asset.  Our five-year plan will see further infrastructure investment, with £1.5bn set aside to reduce storm overflows and improve water quality in 2025-2030.”

Other Yorkshire Water infrastructure investments currently underway in and around Sheffield include:

  • £40m to reduce Phosphorus entering the Don at Blackburn Meadows wastewater treatment works near Meadowhall
  • £2.6m investment in Alport Road CSO, Frecheville to reduce storm discharges
  • The exchange of 1.3m smart meters across Yorkshire, which began in Sheffield in December 2024
