Today we hear from Leon Woods, Technical Sales Manager at Amiblu about how determined they are to tackle the world’s water crisis with modern and smart solutions; and to inspire people around the globe to value water as we should.
Tell us about Amiblu?
Amiblu leads the way in the development of glassfiber reinforced pipe and storage systems for the transportation of waste and clean water. We are fiercely determined to tackle the world’s water crisis with modern and smart solutions. We want to inspire people around the globe to value water as we should. Our infrastructure transports water reliably to and from homes, industries, and every one of us. We work passionately on water security, wastewater discharge, and water-related needs of urbanisation. Our GRP are designed for generations. We work with excitement towards a future where every person on the planet has access to a well-functioning water network. We combine creative ideas, decades of experience, and modern composite materials to outperform existing solutions.
What inspired you to join the water/wastewater sector and tell us about your current role?
My role is Sales and Marketing, through job changes I found myself over 20 years ago joining a pipe manufacturer and since then have worked in manufacturing and distribution companies. It wasn’t what I set out to do, but it is an industry that I am still learning about and interested in, there’s so much to know.
Do you feel that women are adequately represented in the water industry? If not, what are some of the ways we can make the workforce more representative?:
I think that there is a marked increase in the numbers of women working in the water industry at all levels, from entry-level right up to CEO of water companies.
Does Amiblu have a clear diversity, equity, and inclusion company policy?
Yes, very much so. Over the years in this industry, I have seen huge support for diversity, equity and inclusion.
Do you feel encouraged to grow as a woman within Amiblu?
Yes, I do feel encouraged to grow my knowledge as a respected member of the Amiblu team.
What are your hopes for the future of women in the water/wastewater sector?
I see women at all levels now in the industry, from plumbing right up to the CEO of Water Companies and Directors in design consultancies, by their own volition women are making a name for themselves. For me in the business development environment, it’s the same, many years ago in one of my roles, I was actually the only female in the country; it was very much a man’s job in those days. But times have changed and continue to do.
I would like to see more education about the sector at school and college level – the water/wastewater sector is not on the list of aspirational career paths for school leavers, but water is the single most important commodity worldwide, so early education to encourage development in the sector can only help future generations.
