Rio has sold the rights to its water and sewage treatment to Agea and Igua with the companies pledging to collect and treat 90% of the city’s sewage by 2033.
The Brazilian government agreed to privatise Rio de Janeiro’s water and sewage treatment after several years of promises to improve sewage treatment and clean up the state’s polluted Guanabara Bay.
The rights were sold in an auction which saw Sanitation company Aegea win the concession for two of the four blocks and Igua won a third block.
Rio’s public water company Cedae had been criticised recently for releasing water that was cloudy, smelly and sometimes tasted like dirt.
